Start with a morning, not a measurement
A machine can fit on the counter and still make the kitchen awkward. The useful question is whether you can fill it, make a drink, wipe up and put everything back without moving half the room. Begin by choosing the place you actually want to make coffee. Check access to a suitable outlet and whether another person can still use the counter.
This guide is a planning exercise, not a ranking of machines we have tested. It is designed to help you eliminate unsuitable equipment before comparing specifications.
Three ways to allocate the machine budget
Stilosa EC260BK is a lower-cost manual option to compare when leaving room for a grinder matters. Its listed US manufacturer price was $149.95 at our November 5 check. It uses manual milk preparation rather than automatic milk-drink dispensing.
Bambino BES450 and Dedica Duo EC890M are alternative starting points for the same complete-station decision. The Dedica Duo adds a cold-brew preset. Compare those controls with your daily drinks, then price the grinder, scale and any missing pitcher separately. None of these three includes a built-in grinder.
Measure three different spaces
Write down the available width, depth and height. Then measure the working space in front, beside and above the proposed machine. Draw a rectangle on paper for the appliance, and separate rectangles for a grinder, milk pitcher and a place to set the portafilter. A narrow machine does not automatically produce a narrow station.
Check the exact model’s tank-removal direction and portafilter movement in its manual. Include access for emptying the drip tray. If the station sits under a cabinet, consider whether filling and cleaning will require sliding equipment forward every day.

Two compact machines worth comparing
A useful starting pair is the Breville Bambino BES450 and De’Longhi Dedica Duo EC890M. Both are separate-grinder setups rather than machines with a built-in grinder. Their manufacturer prices checked on November 5, 2026 were $299.95 and $249.95 respectively; these are reference prices, not live Amazon offers.
The Bambino pairs manual milk texturing with single-wall and dual-wall basket options. The Dedica Duo adds a dedicated cold-brew recipe and a touch interface. Choose the features you will actually use, then reserve room and budget for your coffee preparation.

| Candidate | Concrete distinction | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Breville Bambino BES450 | Manual steam; single/dual-wall baskets | A path from compatible ground coffee to grinder-based preparation |
| De’Longhi Dedica Duo EC890M | 5.9-inch width; cold-brew preset | A slim body if that drink option matters to you |
| Either machine | Grinder bought separately | Compare a complete station, not only the machine price |
Decide which drinks earn the space
Someone making one espresso before work has different needs from a household making four cappuccinos. List your usual drinks and the number you make consecutively. A milk-drink routine needs a comfortable place to handle the pitcher and clean the wand; an espresso-only routine may leave more budget for a grinder.
Breville positions the Bambino as a compact machine with manual milk texturing. Treat that as a starting example, not proof that it fits your home. Look at the process you will use rather than buying controls you will rarely touch.
Compare the complete purchase
Build a short list of two or three machines in your target price band. For each, record the machine cost, grinder requirement, supplied accessories, cleaning products and likely replacement parts. Compare complete setups on the same basis. A lower machine price may not mean a lower starting bill.
Read the current US listing and the matching manual together. Retail bundles can change, and a similarly named model may have a different set of baskets or accessories. Leave optional decorative purchases until you have made enough drinks to know what genuinely slows you down.
Make a cardboard trial before ordering
Use paper or cardboard to mark the machine and grinder footprints for a day. Put a mug and pitcher in the positions you intend to use. Rehearse taking out a tank and emptying a tray using the manufacturer’s dimensions and diagrams. The trial is inexpensive and can reveal a cabinet or walkway problem that a photograph hides.
Keep the measurements with your shortlist. The right compact setup is the one you can use and maintain comfortably in the available space, even when the kitchen is already busy.
