How we select products

Our guides help readers compare documented features with a specific household job. We research manufacturer product pages and manuals, identify the exact US model and explain where an option may be unsuitable. We have not physically tested the products in our launch guides.

Start with the job

We shortlist around surface compatibility, available space, controls, maintenance and total setup cost. We generally focus on equipment around $100–$400. An option whose regular price exceeds that range is identified when it depends on an offer. Price is checked at the destination before purchase.

Separate specifications from evidence

A tank capacity, tool width or control feature is a manufacturer specification. A claim about stain removal, taste or pickup needs an appropriate test. We do not turn manufacturer advertising into our own results, invent star ratings or call a specification comparison a hands-on review.

Make limitations visible

Each shortlist explains who may find an option useful and who should consider a different approach. Model families and retailer bundles can differ. If a measurement or included accessory decides your purchase, confirm it for the exact selected offer. A missing or conflicting specification stays unresolved until a reliable source clarifies it.

Prices and ownership costs

Dated prices are reference observations, not live offers. We consider consumables, maintenance and additional equipment alongside the initial purchase. Our calculators use your editable inputs; they do not query live retailer prices.

Images and diagrams

Stock photos illustrate the subject, with credits beneath the article image. They do not prove testing or depict an exact model unless the caption explicitly says so. Original planning diagrams explain a process, rather than measured product performance.

Commercial links

We currently use uncommissioned manufacturer product links. Any future affiliate link must be identified and our disclosure updated. Commission availability does not override compatibility or the limitations described in a guide.

Corrections and updates
